In all kinds of areas, people are interested in what tools get used. Jordan’s shoes, Federer’s racquet, Woods’ woods, Hendrix’s guitars. Artists are as guilty of this as anyone else. I have gear-freak tendencies, because it’s much easier to buy more toys than to push myself harder, even though I know the real insights and improvements come from putting in the hours.

All the artists, musicians and sportspeople you really admire and are at the top of their game practiced for countless hours. And they don’t all use the same tools. Go and draw a picture now instead of planning which pen you’re going to buy next. Run one block instead of browsing amazon for shoes. Strum a few chords rather than ponder your next effects pedal purchase. You won’t regret it.
